The Jimo Akolo

Legacy

[About]

Professor Jimo Bola Akolo (1935-2023) was one of the pioneering figures of modern Nigerian art, a renowned painter, educator, scholar, and cultural ambassador whose influence extended across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Over the course of more than five decades, he distinguished himself not only as an accomplished artist but also as an academic leader and mentor whose contributions shaped the development of art education in Nigeria and beyond.

His distinctive style combined geometric design, expressive colour, and cultural symbolism, drawing inspiration from Hausa architectural patterns and traditional aesthetics, creating a modern artistic language deeply rooted in African heritage.
Today, Professor Akolo is remembered as one of the intellectual architects of modern Nigerian art—a man whose brush captured the spirit, traditions, and stories of his people while placing African art firmly on the global stage
